An Introduction to Billitonite Tektites
Okay, so before we jump into the world of Billitonite’s, we want to first give you an introduction to tektites.
Tektites are terrestrial rock that have been melted into the upper atmosphere which form into tektites. Their origins relate back to ancient meteorite strikes on Earth. It’s established that tektites are terrestrial rock that were melted and flung into the atmosphere by the force of an asteroid or comet impact. Cool right!?
Now, if that’s not enough… this all happened many many years ago! Before we were all born, and before anyone we might even know was born! We are talking about hundreds of thousands of years ago, and sometimes even millions of years ago! Yep, you heard it right. There are stones around today from a million years ago! Crazy when you really let that sink in.
The Origins of Billitonite:
Now where exactly did Billitonites come from, we hear you ask?
Well, Billitonite is a rare tektite which is now available at Crystal Nation! It was originally created 780,000 years ago when a large asteroid impacted Indochina which formed tektite debris in the area of Belitung Island in Indonesia. They were formed by the fusing of sand and trace metal particles. At the time of the collision of the asteroid on Earth, huge amounts of energy were released which caused the terrestrial rock of molten material to be thrusted into the atmosphere before re-entering and landing back on planet Earth! Quite the journey for the tektites! Thankfully during the 1860’s tin miners discovered this intriguing darkly embodied stone…
They are now in high demand all over the world, but unfortunately they are very hard to find in today’s market place!
Crystal Properties of Billitonite:
So, the properties of Billitonite are an interesting composition which creates a
dark obsidian look. Very captivating on the eye! This highly glossy finish is truly remarkable and is something you won’t want to miss…
They also have a very distinctive pattern and glossy enamel texture to the surface of this incredible stone!
Some say, this is because during the extensive formation process of Billitonite… it consists of vitrification, cooling and reheating which is known to have caused cracks within the glass droplets. During the past 780,000 years, these tektites would have landed back on Earth and overtime end up buried within terrestrial ground. This would cause the cracks to become amplified as acidic tin laced water trickles around them and into the ground.
Therefore creating the intriguing aesthetic which is a key feature of the Billitonite tektite. This subtle looking stone holds power within which is a serious attribute to it’s capabilities.
Superstitions of Billitonite:
For the final part of the blog post, we want to mention the superstitions surrounding Billitonite! This tektite is known throughout the locals of it’s origin country, Belitung Islands, for having mystical properties!
One of these mystical properties is the ability to help someone from un-wellness. This is an important superstition as Billitonite can have the ability to change someone’s physical and mental wellbeing. This highlights the true power within Billitonite.
